For the first time in a long while I felt a sense of pride to have the skill, knowledge and experience from years of photographing other people's celebrations to professionally photograph something for myself. My grandmother turned 90 this past weekend and there was no way I was NOT going to capture family all together for this milestone.
It's hard to put it into words what it means to me to be able to photograph memories for myself and my family but if I could, it would be that of blessed and thankful.
My grandmother didn't have a clue what she was about to walk into that day. She thought everyone had forgotten her birthday as we all had 'plans' that day.. Oh how wrong she was to think such a thing!
So she thought she was going to hear her sister's choir sing at her old hometown of Millport, Alabama. She got a singing all right but it was not church hymns.. it was that of 'Happy Birthday' from her family and friends.
I haven't seen her smile this much in ages.. it felt good to be there among family.. distant cousins, aunts and uncles, my sister, mom and dad.. Family is everything to me.. so when people ask me what brought me to live in my small hometown.. well, these images pretty much sum it up to me.
